The Viral Panel Premier measures antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human herpesvirus 1 (HSV-1), Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), the Varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV) and human herpes type 6 (HHV-6). These viruses may play a significant role in contributing towards inflammation and autoimmune disorders. High levels of antibodies may suggest autoimmune reactivity which, if not addressed, can eventually lead to the development of autoimmune disease.
The Viral Panel Premier is similar to the Viral Panel Comprehensive, but does not include testing for rubeola (measles).
Autoimmune diseases are the result of genetic and environmental factors which impact the immune system. Environmental factors include exposure to infectious pathogens (including the six listed above), which can cause autoimmunity through molecular mimicry between pathogenic viruses and human tissues.
This mimicry occurs when antibodies produced against viral antigens also attack the body’s own tissues. It is thought that subsequent viral infections further aggravate the disease by activating the immune response against viral and self-antigens. It has also been found that reactivation of these viruses can increase the severity of Covid-19 symptoms.
This test is recommended for those who are genetically predisposed to autoimmune disease, who have a history of exposure to environmental risk factors, or who suffer from long Covid.
