About the test

The Viral Panel Comprehensive measures antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human herpesvirus 1 (HSV-1), Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), the Varicella zoster virus (VZV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), human herpes type 6 (HHV-6) and measles (rubeola). These are the most notable viruses involved in inflammatory, autoimmune and degenerative disorders. High levels of antibodies for these viruses may suggest autoimmune reactivity, which can lead to the development or progression of autoimmune disease.

The Viral Panel Comprehensive is similar to the Viral Panel Premier, but differs by testing for rubeola (measles) in addition to the other six viruses listed above.

Autoimmune diseases are the result of genetic and environmental factors which impact the immune system. Environmental factors include exposure to infectious pathogens (including seven listed above), which can cause autoimmunity through molecular mimicry between pathogenic viruses and human tissues.

This mimicry occurs when antibodies produced against viral antigens also attack the body’s own tissues. It is thought that subsequent viral infections further aggravate the disease by activating the immune response against viral and self-antigens. It has also been found that reactivation of these viruses can increase the severity of Covid-19 symptoms.

This test is recommended for those who are genetically predisposed to autoimmune disease, who have a history of exposure to environmental risk factors, or who suffer from long Covid.
